What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a known as the silent eye thief. The condition can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms don’t appear straight away – instead, they develop slowly over many years. This means many people only seek treatment when they notice they’re losing their sight, when significant damage has already occurred, which is irreversible.
' 10% of people in the UK who go blind do so due to Glaucoma. '
Glaucoma, why are we raising awareness?
I have lived with Glaucoma since 2007. During a routine eye test, the optometrist discovered my eye pressure to be very high, I was referred to Eye A&E immediately. I was informed of my substantial vision lost despite my annual eye checkups. In the space of a year, I had lost close to all my vision in the left eye. To date Ive encountered numerous surgeries and on constant eye drops. It's lucky I was diagnosed, otherwise the lost could have been far more.
" I urge you all to have your eyes checked regularly, not just when there is something wrong. "
I tell my story because I want people to know they are not alone, hopefully I am someone they can relate to and know there's hope after Glaucoma.

At craft fairs you may seen us selling packets of origami stars to raise awareness for Glaucoma and raising money for Moorfields Eye Charity. 2021 We were selling packets of stars to raise money for The Seahorse Appeal. The Seahorse bioanalyser is an essential equipment which will allow researchers to find more answers for 'all eye conditions', not just Glaucoma. We raised a modest amount of £500. |
